Things I’m Geeking About Right Now: Post-Comic-Con Edition

Oh come on. You know you're a little sad you missed this.

Oh come on. You know you’re a little sad you missed this.

There has been an absolute FLOOD of movie and TV stuff following the Holy Days of Geek that we loyal disciples refer to as Comic-Con, so I thought this would be a superb time to revive my Things I’m Geeking About Right Now segment–which I haven’t done in quite some time, come to think of it. So much geek to catch up on! Let’s see if we can make up for lost time starting with…

Exhibit A: The Sherlock Christmas Special

The BBC Sherlock team is kicking it old school with a Christmas special set back in the late 1800s–the traditional time period for most Holmes tales, if I’m not mistaken. I am pretty darn excited for this, and I think Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman look pretty awesome in the above clip. I mean, Watson’s ‘STACHE. I would say how delightfully hipster it is, but since this is set in the 1800s I guess it’s just…delightful. Also, Andrew Scott (Moriarty) put together a lovely little video for Comic-Con with assistance from Cumberbatch and Mark Gatiss (Mycroft), and it makes me all kinds of happy. Check it out:

Exhibit B: Doctor Who Season 9

Aaaaand continuing along the BBC train of thought…Maybe it’s because the last few seconds of this contain a surprising and awesome cameo from a very kickass Game of Thrones actor, but I think the little trailer for season 9 of Doctor Who looks pretty darn solid. Season 8 could’ve been better, but I’m hopeful that Peter Capaldi’s sophomore season will work out some of the kinks. Fingers crossed!

Exhibit C: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

As always, The Hunger Games looks pretty epic. While I was overall very satisfied with Mockingjay – Part 1, I felt it didn’t quite up the ante like Catching Fire did. I’m hoping for a finale that lives up. In fact, I’m hoping for a finale that is slightly tweaked from the book because, for me, the book fumbled a bit. We’ll see what happens. Either way, I’m sure Jennifer Lawrence will be flawless, per usual.

Exhibit D: Ash vs Evil Dead

I did not realize how excited I was for this until I saw this trailer. Now, Halloween cannot get hear fast enough. Seriously guys, this cracked me up. Evil Dead II is probably one of my favorite horror-comedies (see me talk about it here), and this Starz series looks like it’s more than capable of doing it justice. You keep being groovy, Bruce Campbell. The world appreciates it.

Exhibit E: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Okay, so Comic-Con has produced another Batman v Superman trailer, and while I’m still not entirely sold on it, I’m the tiniest bit more hopeful. Admittedly, 75% of my takeaway was “Dear God, what is that thing they’ve put on Jesse Eisenberg’s head?!” I’m still not entirely sure about that. But I am sure that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is looking fierce, and I’m sure all the action sequences will be spectacular. I’ll give you a chance, Zack Snyder. But after Man of Steel, I will never fully trust you again…

Exhibit F: Suicide Squad

Now THIS is something worth getting truly excited about. With all of these characters, it could be overcrowded. Hell, it could be a complete train wreck. But this first trailer for Suicide Squad still has me doing freaking cartwheels I’m so excited. All right, not cartwheels, but I’m still pumped. Yes, Jared Leto’s Joker looks scary as all get-out. Yes, it’s nice to see Will Smith back in the game. Yes, the film looks all dim and moody and atmospheric and awesome. But is it weird that what I’m most excited about is Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn? I don’t know what it is about that character, but I love her, and I’m excited to see her brought to the big screen. Bring it on, Suicide Squad. I cannot wait.

Exhibit G: A bunch of non-Comic-Con stuff that we need to discuss

My reaction to all of this geeky news.

My reaction to all of this geeky news.

I realize a lot of this is old news, but GUYS. Martin Freeman has a mystery role in Captain America: Civil War.

And GUYS. Tom Holland has been cast as Marvel’s new Spider-Man/Peter Parker.

Also, this DC’s Legends of Tomorrow trailer from The CW:

And this Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials trailer:

And this Scream Queens trailer from Fox:

And this Supergirl trailer from CBS (which, okay, could be fairly cheesy, but let’s give it a shot):

Whew! That’s a lot of geeking. I think I’ve been needing to get that out of my system for a while now. What do you guys think? Anything on here that you’re particularly excited about? Any geeky news that I failed to mention ? Lots to look forward to, my friends. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: It’s a good time to be a geek. 😀

  1. Your Spider-Man info is wrong, dude. Tom Holland was cast.

I couldn’t agree with you more on Batman V. Superman. But I really don’t see what’s so special about Suicide Squad yet. So far they’ve walked down the street a lot, and also stood there.

    • Thanks for that Spider-Man bit yesterday. Frantically adjusted it on my lunch break. Still felt like a jackass. I knew it was Tom Holland, but for some reason I had that other kid on the brain. Probably because his name is much more fun. There’s no use selling Suicide Squad to you. You will hate it. You’ve seen Shakma, so all other films are ruined for you.

  2. Hooker!

I sure hope this season of Who is better than the last but that shot of the Doctor playing a guitar isn’t giving me hope….

As for Ash v Evil Dead – I hope your mom doesn’t see this but:

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

    • But surely that last moment of the Doctor and you know who inspires SOME hope?!?! We’ll hope against all hopes, Giantess. How did I know Ash vs Evil Dead would totally be your thing? 😉

  3. I’m with you on Dawn of Justice. I’m not a huge fan of Man of Steel and I think DC is approaching their shared universe wrong, but I am trying to remain hopeful. Heroes of Tomorrow looks like it should be amazing. The DC Arrowverse will be rocking it in the fall!

Just to throw it out there, Tom Holland has been cast as Spider-Man, not Butterfield (although he was in the running).

    • I agree–I really wish DC had taken the time to piece their universe together as brilliantly as Marvel has. But, hey, we’ll see what happens. I only wish they could’ve kept Nolan on instead of bringing in cheesy Zack Snyder. :/ Legends of Tomorrow is going to be the bessssst!! DC may be behind on movies, but they are killing it on TV, and I love it. Thanks, Drew. Brian pointed out that mistake, too, and as soon as I saw his comment, I frantically scrambled to fix it. I knew it was Holland. I read about it and everything. So I have no idea what got into my brain when I typed this post. Lol.

      • When I saw Brian posted that, it was too late. Oops.

I’ve been saying since shortly after Man of Steel and it was announced that the DC’s film and television universes are separate that they should have used the TV shows to build their characters then use the movies for big properties and team ups. It would be unprecedented and unique. Image the character building DC could accomplish. They shouldn’t try to replicate what Marvel is doing and instead do their own thing rather than playing catch up. DC has had great TV properties, especially with Arrowverse and should capitalize on that.

        • Haha no worries. I’m glad you guys caught that! Oh I totally agree. I hate, hate, HATE that they’re building this epic TV world, yet they turned around and cast other actors for their movies. Seriously, why couldn’t they have let Grant Gustin just carry over his role to the films? Lame. There’s SO MUCH wasted potential. I really want DC to be able to compete with Marvel, but I think they’ve picked the wrong people to spearhead the whole process. Really, Drew, they just need to talk to us about this. 😉

  4. Cara! You lovely geek you. 🙂 I haven’t had time to check out any new trailers yet. I’m a little bored with superhero stuff but will be more excited closer to the time they all come out, I suppose. Hey! Guess what! I JUST finally watched the final episode of the last season of Doctor Who. I clearly wasn’t too bothered, I guess! 😉 Think I just have a Christmas special to go now….

    • Yeah, the superhero stuff is def heavy right now. I keep thinking it’ll cool down, but it seems to be around to stay…although I’m okay with that. 😉 Well what did you think of that finale? Honestly, I didn’t love it. Although I enjoyed the Christmas special significantly more, I think. You’ll have to let me know what you think.

  5. Doctor Who is going to have to do something PHENOMENAL to win me back after the shit show the last 3 seasons were.

  6. Wtf is Scream Queens? I have to watch that. 😀 I knew about it but didn’t know it’s going to be that much tongue in cheek.

I’m so excited about Suicide Squad. Well, Iike almost everyone else is too. But Leto looks lethal and mental and Margot Robbie looks and sounds very very promising.

I love Eisenberg, so I really hope they’ve done much better job with Dawn of Justice but that trailer left me nothing. :/ I detested Man of Steel. I actually concentrated tying my shoelaces while the final battle was going on in that sucky film. In cinema. Still makes me mad how bad it was.

    And Sherlock ❤

I still have to catch up with all the news from Comic Con. I've been too busy with my real life. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have time. It takes few hours to read and watch everything.

    • Haha right? I never really watched much Glee, but I love American Horror Story, and it kind of seems like Murphy is meeting in the middle with Scream Queens. It looks amazing.

I have very, very high hopes for Suicide Squad. Leto does look great, but I am still so fond of Ledger’s Joker that I’m reserving judgment. Haha. But Robbie already seems awesome. Cannot. Wait.

LOL. I love that tying your shoes was more important to you than that fight in Man of Steel. That’s about how I felt. Who knows? Maybe Dawn of Justice will somehow be awesome. We can hope…

      Yaaaassss so much Sherlock ❤

Oh goodness. Do you read and watch everything from Comic-Con?! That's dedication!! Lol.

  7. Some great choices Cara, I’m going to miss the Doctor Who premiere as it airs the night my sister gets married! Have to say I’m looking forward to BvS a lot more than Suicide Squad – but Civil War most of all!

    • Thanks, Chris! Yeah there’s just soooo much to look forward to! Bummer about the DW premiere! Although, yeah, I guess your sister’s wedding should probably come first. Haha. Oh I’m with you–as much as I’m looking forward to Suicide Squad, Civil War is at the top of my list. Too bad we didn’t get a little teaser for that!

  8. I’m not sold on Dawn of Justice and honestly, this whole superhero thing is getting too much. Its all superheroes.. Haha! I needed a break from Arrow and Flash and all that stuff last season. I didn’t even go see Avengers 2 and I don’t feel all that bad about it. As for Batman, I’m not passing any judgement since I haven’t seen Man of Steel yet and I’m not incredibly motivated to see it. Not a huge fan of Cavill and just Superman in general. Its on my to-do list though…

BUT, Scorch Trials trailer looks fantastic. At least the book showed more movie potential than novel. Haha! 🙂

    • Haha I knoooow the pop culture world is way too overrun with superhero entertainment right now. I just can’t help myself–I still love it. Eh. If you’re a fan of Cavill, Man of Steel might be worth it, but I don’t think you’ll be very impressed. It’s just…disappointing. :/

Heck yes Scorch Trials! I’m excited about that! I still need to read the books though. Are they worth it?

  9. I’m so excited for the next season of Sherlock. I’m surprised but happy they’ve decided to do a period piece. I’m also really pumped for the final Hunger Games movie. Mockingjay Part 1 felt a bit flat compared to Catching Fire but the trailer for Part 2 looks very strong. Lots to look forward to! 🙂

    • I’m THRILLED they’re going a period piece for Sherlock. I think it’s going to be really cool. I do think Mockingjay Pt 1 wasn’t as strong as Catching Fire, but I still think it was a strong film–better than the book, for me. I have high hopes for Pt 2. We’ll cross our fingers!!! 🙂
