Things I’m Geeking About Right Now, Pt. 5

Because some things deserve this level of excitement.

Because some things deserve this level of excitement.

Hello, hello, lovely people! Gees, isn’t it amazing how many awesome things can happen in the span of a month? Well, less than a month, actually–that was the last time I did one of these posts. Is it…too soon to geek out again? Have I been geeking out too much? DO I HAVE A PROBLEM??? If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions, I apologize…but I’m gonna go ahead and geek out anyway. 😉

Exhibit A: The HORROR! …Trailers, I mean.

I feel these these two trailers have kind of flown under the radar, but I’m excited about them! Above we have the first peek at horror master Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Crimson Peak. Admittedly, the trailer doesn’t reveal much and also looks very…odd. But I’m still pumped. The trailer below is one I’m a little more apprehensive about–especially because I like the original so much–but I’m holding out hope. I mean, it’s got Sam Rockwell in it. And they’re clearly going for a different vibe. Although when they tried that for Evil Dead I hated it…and they replaced sassy little Zelda Rubinstein with a normal-sized dude…Let me just stop before I talk myself out of being interested. Haha. Here’s the trailer for Poltergeist.

Exhibit B: All the nerd pics

jason-momoa-aquaman

Lately it has been an absolute flood of superhero images! While I’m still veeeeery uncertain about this whole Dawn of Justice business, I will admit that director Zack Snyder has managed to make all his heroes look amazing, as evidenced by Mr. Jason Momoa above in his Aquaman attire. Then there’s…

deadpool mask

Ryan Reynolds teasing us on Twitter with this Deadpool mask pic! I love seeing that work is being done on this, and I really, really hope it pays off. Oooh also did you guys hear that Morena Baccarin was cast as the female lead in this? I’m game! And one more for you…

avengers-age-of-ultron

BOOM! Age of Ultron Poster. The gang is looking as fierce as ever–and there are newcomers! Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are easy to spot in the top right-hand corner, but who, pray tell, is that caped individual flying in the sky? Rumor has it that is Vision, whom you can read a bit more about in this lovely article from Business Insider (where I also borrowed the image from…I should really start crediting images). The article also mentions that Robert Downey Jr. took to Twitter and teased some big news in a few days’ time. Who knows what Marvel has up its sleeve now…

Exhibit C: Video game stuffs

Okay, I know I don’t often talk about video games on here, but there are a few franchises that I really love, and it just so happens that two of my favorites have big stuff on the way. As a Batman freak, I am, of course, obsessed with the Arkham games. It’s no news that the franchise has another game coming out in June (Arkham Knight), but I really was just looking for an excuse to share the above trailer with you. It’s the first trailer, I believe, in which we get to hear John Noble voicing Scarecrow. I mean, guys…John Noble. What more can I say?

However, my heart also belongs to the Legend of Zelda games, and have you heard? Netflix is apparently developing a live-action series out of it! While I question how well that’s actually going to work, I can’t help reallyreallyreally wanting it to succeed. In this article from The Wall Street Journal, it’s even described as “‘Game of Thrones‘ for a family audience.” Huh. So I guess they’ll be cutting out all of the incest and boobs and nightmare-inducing death scenes, eh?

Exhibit D: Lady Gaga, of all people, released an AHS teaser

How delightfully random! Fresh from her frankly amazing Sound of Music tribute at the Oscars (seriously, watch that here if you haven’t seen it), Lady Gaga surprised pretty much everyone yesterday with not only the news that she will have a starring role in the next season of American Horror Story, but she even gave us a little teaser revealing the next subtitle! And that is…Hotel! While I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about Gaga’s presence on AHS, I’m kind of excited about the idea of a hotel setting! I mean, if it worked for 1408, The Shining, and Psycho…why not?

Exhibit E: So. Much. Superhero. News.

superheroes

I was too lazy to think of a way to do this elegantly, so I’m just gonna slap some bullet points up here!

  • The lineup for TNT’s live-action Teen Titans series has been revealed, and it’s kind of amazing! Dick Grayson a.k.a. Robin #1 will apparently begin the series as Robin but transition into Nightwing–a DC character I would love to see get some screen time. Barbara Gordon has also been confirmed, but she won’t be going by “Oracle” just yet. There will apparently be a pair of characters I know nothing about who call themselves “Hawk” and “Dove” whose real names are Hank Hall and Dawn Granger. And here’s the bit I was the most pleasantly surprised about: There will be not one, but two kickass ladies–Raven and Starfire (whom I am hoping will get to wear more clothes than she gets to wear in the comics). Is anyone else doing the math here? That’s four female superheroes! There are only two men! I’ll try not to get too “girl power” on you, but FINALLY. Forget token female characters–the ladies are out in full force. No pressure, writers, but I fully expect these characters to rock…
  • The news that made geeks around the world delirious with joy: Spidey is joining the Marvel universe! AT LAST! I know Marvel has been gunning for this for some time since Spider-Man is apparently a crucial part of the Civil War storyline, but I’m just looking forward to all of his sassy interactions with his new super buds. There have also been whispers that Spider-Man is not going to be Peter Parker at all and instead be newly introduced Spidey, Miles Morales…but we shall see. I kind of hope that’s true. Spider-Man needs a fresh start. Nonetheless, I will miss sweet Andrew Garfield as Spidey. I can sense some of you yelling at me (Eric and Brian), but I quite enjoyed him over sad sack (yes, Melissa, I’m using it again) Tobey Maguire. You and your pretty eyes and perfect hair will be missed, Mr. Garfield. Sigh.
  • Speaking of whispers…there have been very interesting whispers that Arrow‘s own John Diggle may have a higher calling than just being Oliver Queen’s body guard/bff. In fact, he might just end up as a very important DC superhero himself. So is it John Diggle…or John Stewart? A lot of people seem to be thinking that Diggle may have a “Stewart” hidden somewhere in that name, setting him up to become none other than the next Green Lantern! For those of you who are confused and saying, “Wait a sec–I thought Green Lantern was a white dude named Hal Jordan,” you’re not wrong. Hal is, I believe, the first Lantern, but somewhere down the line a gentleman named John Stewart gets a ring, too, and Diggle could fit the bill. Not gonna lie, I hope it’s true. Diggle would be an awesome Green Lantern, and it’d also be one step closer to a TV Justice League…
  • Okay, ONE MORE bit of whispers before I end this with an actual fact: Coulson and some of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. gang might just make this nerd’s dreams come true by showing up in Avengers: Age of Ultron. I don’t know, guys. The intel seems sketchy at best, but I’m crossing my fingers anyway…
  • Nightcrawler is returning to the X-Men movies via Kodi Smit-McPhee! I am so, so excited about this. Alan Cumming’s portrayal of the blue teleporter in X2 instantly won my heart, and he has remained my very favorite movie mutant ever since. I like Smit-McPhee, and I think he could do a great job with the character. P.S. If you’d like a more detailed description of my love for the character, just go here.

Phew! I feel so much better now that I have all that geeking out of my system. So what upcoming geeky things are you guys excited about? Or apprehensive about? Or downright pissed about? You know I’m happy to talk geek, so bring it on! 🙂

P.S. Stay tuned for a very special reblog tomorrow…

  1. Full of awesomeness right here, Cara! Doesn’t Crimson Peak look totally and absolutely amazing? I really hope it lives up to how it is in the trailer.
Superheroes are everywhere right now. I fell behind on Arrow and The Flash so now all I can do is wait for the entire season to come out or hope that Netflix will update it eventually. So all I have now is The 100 which in season finale this week, I think. Off topic right now…haha! But yay! I’m excited about all these movies. And yes, John Diggle as Green Lantern would be so awesome if it were true 🙂
I’m guessing Arkham Knight is only for PS4? We’re only upgrading our PS3 later this year. Haha!

    • Aw thanks, Kim! 🙂 Yes, I have high hopes for Crimson Peak! Del Toro does know how to deliver on atmosphere. I hope he has another good one on his hands! Oooh you need to catch up on Arrow and The Flash, lady! Soooo good! And wouldn’t Diggle be the BEST Green Lantern?! Do you like The 100 then? I always seen bits of it and am like, “Now what the heck is going on here…?” Haha. Well, Arkham Knight is going to be on PS4 and Xbox One, I believe, but it also doesn’t come out until June, so plenty of time to upgrade! I actually don’t have a system that would support it right now, so I’m hoping I can afford a little upgrade myself…cross your fingers for me!!

  2. Jason Momoa… bring me a hankie cos gurrrrl I am drooling over here. But anyway aside from that Crimson Peak looks bizarre but kind of awesome but I am pretty disinterested in Poltergeist. The original is a classic and I think it should just be left in peace.

    • LOL. Yeah, Momoa is lookin’ goooood here! Crimson Peak could definitely be bizarre, but I’m really hoping it will be equally awesome! As for Poltergeist, honestly, I think the main draw for me is Sam Rockwell. At first I was like, “No way,” but now I kind of want it to be good…

  3. While ‘The Avengers 2’ does look pretty cool, I’m particularly annoyed by the Scarlet Witch’s lack of costume! For me, it’s all about ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ and ‘Jurassic World’ for the moment!

    • Hmm. I don’t really have any problems with Scarlet Witch’s outfit–especially since, from what I’ve seen, her comic book getup is basically a bathing suit with boots and weird headgear…Lol. I haven’t seen any of the Mad Max films, so I can’t really get into that (the trailer looks kind of weird to me, actually…haha), but heck yes Jurassic World! I have geeked about that several times in previous posts. 🙂

        • But Thor also gets to wear armor and not a swimsuit soooo…Lol. I can understand the frustration of seeing a beloved costume altered, but I’m also all for female superheroes getting to wear more clothes. Plus, her costume seems a little too…much for the vibe Whedon’s going for. So I’m cool with her look. But, hey, to each his/her own. 🙂

  4. This post is made of all kinds of awesome. I’m a bit said about Garfield though, I rather liked him. And how did I miss that Netflix/Zelda news? Infinite possibilities! Not sure about the GoT comparison though. I hope they just mean in terms of “scope”, and not the other, more “family-oriented” direction.

    • Lol! Thanks, V! 🙂 Yeah I’m bummed about Garfield, too. I hope his pretty self gets attached to some other successful franchise. I really, really hope they make Zelda work! I’m kind of wanting it to be something like BBC’s Merlin. Did you ever see that? I think that vibe could totally work for it! GoT seems a little…heavy for Link and co. Lol.

      • That would be perfect, Cara! Yes! A Zelda story with a Merlin feel. I did indeed watch Merlin, in fact I totally binged on it, and I really enjoyed it. It was littered with problems and issues (particularly bad dialogue delivery in the beginning), but it was a total guilty pleasure. Plus! Anthony Head. Need I say more?

        • I did totally the same thing with Merlin! Binged that bad boy like nobody’s business! Haha. You’re right–had its fair share of problems for sure, but COLIN MORGAN. God, I adore that kid. Of course, I say “kid” knowing he’s pushing 30, which makes him older than me, but I refuse to think of him as any older than, like, 19. OMG. He would be the SWEETEST LINK.

…Okay, okay, he’s not a blond, but a girl can dream, right??

        • Colin Morgan! As Link! Holy crap, that would be brilliant. You’re on a roll here Cara, I don’t know why you’re not a casting agent. He would make a seriously sweet Link. Can’t believe he’s pushing 30, lol. First time I saw him I couldn’t help but wonder, what is he, 12?

        • LOL! I’ll send Hollywood my resume and see what they think. 😉 Wouldn’t he be the most adorable Link?? I’ll have to mull over Zelda and Ganondorf…They must be equally awesome!

        • Ooooh Tom Hardy would be an awesome Ganondorf! Definitely needs to be somebody muscly. Think we could convince him to jump to TV?? 😉

Here’s another: What about Idris Elba?? Also, I don’t know how you feel about Abigail Breslin, but I can’t shake the idea that she’d be an adorable Zelda…

  5. thanks for bringing me up to speed on all things geekaliciious (hey, it’s a word, right?) Speaking of speed, I have a question about Quicksilver. Although I enjoyed deconstructing the new Avengers poster (mostly so I could use the word ‘deconstructing’) I am confused about Qucksilver. He was in the last X-Men film, right? So he’s an X-Man. But he’s also an Avenger? I thought that Marvel didn’t own the movie rights to X Men characters (Fox does) and that’s why we’ll never see a movie with, for example, Wolverine and Iron Man … so how can the character of Quicksilver appear in both a Fox movie and a Marvel/Disney movie? (I know it’s different actors)

    • Happy to help in all things geekalicious, Niall! Lol. As for Quicksilver…well, things get a little muddy with the rights to some of the X-Men characters. Somehow, both Marvel AND Fox own Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. I have no idea how that worked out–maybe Whedon knew he wanted them and somehow was able to make a deal? It’s very confusing. But we basically just have to accept that the Quicksilvers belong to completely separate worlds (which blows because I’d LOVE to see Peters’ sassy Quicksilver interacting with the Marvel world). I hate that, but it is what it is. :/

  7. Nice round up lady! Biggest YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY here? The Ryan Reynolds pic. Dammit, I have been waiting YEARS for this, and I just can’t wait. It has got to be amazing, otherwise all sorts of heavy stuff is going to go down :/

    SO much superhero stuff!

  8. Teen Titans sounds interesting-I’m liking the focus on girl power too-it’s about time! And then Deadpool…thanks for the Ryan Reynold’s picture, glad my Ryan Reynold’s obsession can continue. Although I’m a bit weary of another Spiderman reboot (and sad about the possible exit of the lovely Andrew Garfield), if they’re doing Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker then that would be cool-especially if Community’s Donald Glover got his wish and finally became Spiderman! But of course its Avengers: Age of Ultron I’m most excited about. Its great that theres so much to look forward to.

    • I know right? Supergirls all the way! I am so psyched to see Ryan Reynolds get another crack at Deadpool! Here’s hoping they treat the character way better than they did in Origins…I know what you mean about Spidey, but, yeah Miles Morales could be great! Does someone on Community dress up like Spider-Man? Haha I’ve never seen it before, but that sounds awesome. Heck yeah Age of Ultron! It’s a great time to be a nerd! 🙂

      • Community is awesome you should watch it. One of the actors Donald Glover has been gunning for the Spiderman role since the last reboot. I hope he gets it. Unfortunately he did not dress up as Spiderman in the show. Although there have been some great Batman impressions on Community.

  9. Holy shit Cara this is a mega geek blast of information!!!! I’m excited about Crimson Peak and the Arkham Knight game. Speaking of Guillermo Del Toro and videogames did you know he’s producing the new Silent Hill game?

    • Haha what can I say? Lots to geek about, my friend. 🙂 Heck yes Crimson Peak and Arkham Knight! I think I’d heard that about Guillermo del Toro! I’ve actually never played the Silent Hill games, although my friend showed me, like, 5 minutes of some teaser that’s out for the new game now and it scared the bejesus out of me…

  10. Great list! Thanks for giving us more things to geek out over! And you’re right — Lady Gag’s Oscar Sound of Music performance really was amazing. Wish we could hear her sing like that more often! 🙂
