How about a brand-spankin’ new list of lovable idiots for your Saturday enjoyment? The lovely Abbi from Where the Wild Things Are is here to share just such a list with us! Abbi has a wonderful blog that dabbles in all kinds of things–movie reviews, throwback pictures, recipes, fashion, top ten lists…it’s all great fun, so follow her! Anywho, here’s her list of April Fools!
In the film Airheads the receptionist suggests that Pip, played by Adam Sandler (who narrowly missed out on making this list), is so dumb he has to be cute. Whether that is true or not is open for debate but sometimes the most interesting character in a movie is not the one with the biggest brain but rather the one whose goofy charm wins you over. With that in mind, I have chosen five cinematic “idiots”, who I can’t help but love. I hope you love them too!
Film: Kenny (2006)
Played by: Shane Jacobson
What makes him lovable: Kenny is simply the nicest guy in the world. He is dedicated to his friends and family and heroically passionate about his job… as a sanitation engineer. He also has some of the most amazing sayings out there.
What makes him an idiot: Kenny isn’t able to see his own potential and he lets everyone around him take advantage of his good nature.
“Kenny: Funny part is parents look at me and say ‘that’s not much of a job, is it?’. And I say ‘well you had kids’. ‘You spent the first two years handling their shit, and you weren’t getting paid for that’. They shit green, the only things that should be green are pears, apples and Martians.”
Film: Finding Nemo (2003)
Voiced by: Ellen DeGeneres
What makes her lovable: Dory is a great friend, who is upbeat even in the worst circumstances. She’s also really, really funny and strangely wise when she needs to be.
What makes her an idiot: She’s not great at assessing a situation and she has a three second memory, which means she’s permanently confused.
“Dory: I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy. Come on, Squishy Come on, little Squishy. [baby talk, the jellyfish stings her] Dory: Ow. Bad Squishy, bad Squishy.”
Played by: Steve Carrell
What makes him lovable: He is a very loyal friend and he never seems to mind that everyone is taking the piss out of him.
What makes him an idiot: Brick is literally more stupid than a Brick. It’s a miracle that he’s dressed most of the time.
“Brick: I love lamp!”
Film: Empire Records (1995)
Played by: Ethan Embry
What makes him lovable: He’s really sweet and naïve… and he will clean your feet with a feather duster. He’s also fiercely loyal to the Empire and he’s not afraid to chase a shoplifter.
What makes him an idiot: He wants to start a band called Mark but spelled with a C instead of a K because its psychedelic… and he’s convinced that the band Gwar is trying to eat him.
“Mark: We mustn’t dwell… no, not today. We CAN’T. Not on Rex Manning day.”
Film: Dazed and Confused (1993)
Played by: Rory Cochrane
What makes him lovable: He’s just a sweet, cuddly stoner who wants everyone to get along… and get high.
What makes him an idiot: Permanently being high. Slater’s brain cells are completely fried.
“Slater: Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington, man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man, when he come in the door, man, she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.”
Thanks so much, Abbi! Another great list! And what a coinky dink–just saw Rory Cochrane in Oculus, albeit a very, very different role. I think he’s probably better as a lovable stoner. 😉 More lists on the way soon, but it’s EASTER tomorrow! I’m going to try to post a funny little video or something, but just in case I don’t get around to it, Happy Easter!
