April Fools 2014: The Flim Culb

flim culb

Good day, friends! How about some lovable idiots to brighten your day? Rowena from the excellent Flim Culb is here to continue April Fools with her own list of lovable film and television idiots. Are you following The Flim Culb? If not, pop over and introduce yourself! Rowena is running a very cool movie and TV review blog that you should certainly check out. Anyway, take it away, Rowena!

The Flim Culb’s Top Five Lovable Idiots of Big Screen and Small

Karen Smith – Mean Girls (2004)

“If you’re from Africa, why are you white?”

This is a slightly obvious choice, but nonetheless an easily justifiable one. In a teen film that surpasses all others (perhaps due to the involvement of Fey and Poehler), Karen (Amanda Seyfried) serves as the obligatory dumb blonde stereotype. She pulls it off with such oblivious innocence that her clear sub-standard intellect is nothing but endearing.

Gob Bluth – Arrested Development (2003-2013)

gob bluth

“I’ve made a huge mistake.”

In a cast that is made up almost completely of lovable idiots, it’s hard to pick just one member of the Bluth family, but I did, and it’s Gob (Will Arnett). Gob’s complete lack of regard and understanding for just about everything and everyone around him could easily be irritating. It is his determination that one-day his magic tricks, or “illusions”, will come off without a hitch, that one-day his father and brother, Michael, will respect him, that ingratiates him to the audience. Plus, he’s just hilarious.

Kenneth Parcell – 30 Rock (2006-2013)

30 Rock

“I don’t drink hot liquids of any kind. That’s the devil’s temperature.”

Kenneth Parcell is an idiot of unusual proportions. He doesn’t seem to be aware that he is an idiot; instead he often delivers morsels of ‘advice’ in the form of anecdotes from his terrifyingly rustic hometown of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Despite having an almost permanent, and slightly crazed, smile on his face, Kenneth provides some of the more surreal, and sometimes quite macabre, elements in 30 Rock.

Steve Zissou – The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

steve zissou

“Son of a bitch, I’m sick of these dolphins.”

Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is a world renowned oceanographer, and therefore not your average idiot. It is not his lack of intelligence that puts him into the category of lovable idiot, but more his blind avoidance of how ludicrous his goal is. As captain of a ship full of a variety of weirdos, Steve Zissou is hunting down the elusive, and possibly mythical, jaguar shark that supposedly devoured his friend. He carries out his mission with a straight face. Somehow.

Ted Striker – Airplane! (1980)

“I guess the foot’s on the other hand now.”

Ted Striker (Robert Hayes) is the lovable idiot that never fails to make me laugh. He, like the entirety Airplane! is just plain stupid. This is humour in its most literal sense, and it’s glorious. There really is no other way to describe it.

Thanks so much, Rowena! This series have had several awesome lists so far, and there’ll be another one comin’ atcha tomorrow! Have a great day, friends! 🙂
