Premiere Particulars: Sherlock

sherlock 1

Though I still have another month-and-a-half or so before any of my spring shows start to pop up (namely Hannibal, Bates Motel, and Game of Thrones), Sherlock—dear, sweet, wonderful Sherlock—finally had its season three premiere in the U.S. after an excruciating two-year hiatus. For those of you who are new followers, you’ll come to realize the depth of my obsession with this show (and you can read my review of its first two seasons here). It’s just soooo good. If you’ve seen it, you probably understand. But enough yammering. Did the season three premiere deliver? Here are the particulars.

sherlock 2

What I liked:

  • Sherlock and John. I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it 1,000 more times: Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are phenomenal in their roles, and they have fantastic chemistry. Best bromance on television by a landslide. (P.S. Have you watched this video of Cumberbatch reading R. Kelly lyrics yet?)
  • The reunion. After a dramatic season finale in which Sherlock fakes his own death, he drops in on John to let him know that he has, in fact, been alive for the past two years. It’s emotional, hilarious, and actually quite drawn out whenever John reacts, reacts some more, and…erm…reacts again. You’ll see what I mean by “reacts.”
  • Mary. Played by Freeman’s real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, Mary is John’s new love interest, and she seems to fit in perfectly. She’s sweet and clever, she really seems to care for John, and, best of all, she completely supports the bromance. I think I’m gonna like this gal.
  • The Moriarty cameo. Yes, there’s one in there, and it is brilliant and hilarious. However, it’ll also make you miss Andrew Scott like crazy.
  • The brotherly banter. I’ve already established that Cumberbatch and Freeman have excellent chemistry, but so do Cumberbatch and Mark Gatiss, who plays Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft. Their relationship is played up a bit in this episode, and it’s quite wonderful. Fun fact: Gatiss also wrote this episode, which is yet another reason to adore him.
  • We meet Sherlock’s parents, and they are not what you’d expect. Also, they are played by Cumberbatch’s real-life parents, which could very well be the cutest casting choice ever.

What I didn’t like:

  • One of the opening scenes is a little over-the-top. I’ll try not to ruin too much, but it involves running through the Russian wilds and a brief torture scene (don’t worry—it’s PG). Don’t get me wrong, I still loved it, but for a moment I had to pause and go, “Really?”
  • When Sherlock reappears after a two-year absence, John is, needless to say, conflicted. However, by the end of the episode, this frustration has all but evaporated. I could understand how some of it goes away, but it seems like a good heart-to-heart talk should’ve been squeezed in to make this change more believable. But maybe that’s just the fangirl in me wanting more bromantic bro time.
  • So, big surprise—the mystery is solved and the day is saved by the end of the episode, but the conclusion seems a little too easy. Again, I won’t spoil anything, but if you’ve seen the episode, you probably understand what I mean.
  • Several scenarios play out showing how Sherlock might have survived his “death.” One of these is very over-the-top, but epic. Another is obviously a fake, but a glorious nod to Sherlock fan fiction. And then there’s one more—one that Sherlock himself shares. The latter seems to be the true story of his survival, but it’s shared in a way that still leaves a question mark, which is kind of maddening for fans.

I couldn’t resist this picture. Just couldn’t.

The Potential: As always, the potential for this season of Sherlock is off the charts. The actors are perfect in their roles, the script is fantastically clever, the humor is amped up, and the pure, addictive fun is undeniable. The premiere episode may have a few minor issues, but by no means does that deter this fan. It’s a new chapter for Sherlock, y’all, and it’s off to a great start.

My Grade: A

So for those of you who caught the premiere, what did you think? Will it be another great season? And for any of my U.K. readers who’ve seen all of season three…were you happy with it? Are you already having Sherlock withdrawals and in need of season four? Here’s hoping the wait for the next season won’t be quite so lengthy this time…Anyway, I hope you are all having a fantastic day so far! More on the way for Resolutions 2014 very soon! 😀

  1. Enjoyed parts of it, especially John’s increasingly “enthusiastic” responses to Sherlock’s return. Was really not satisfied with the “resurrection” resolutions. They seemed a bit too easy, without giving any real answers. I wanted *resolution*, lol!

Thanks for the bits about Mary and Sherlock’s parents. Will be watching for them in the future …

  2. I haven’t ever seen any of these because I suck : (

P.S. – what are you doing posting so early? Don’t you know it’s not nice to mess with an old man’s OCD? I like it though : )

    • You don’t suck!! …But seriously, go start this series, like, right now. Lol. And I posted early because my schedule is weird today. If I didn’t post then I wasn’t going to able to post until after 6, and that simply wouldn’t do!

      • I need to find them and start from the beginning – for sure : )

YES – THANK YOU for making the right decision!! If you hadn’t posted during your regular time I would have gotten really stressed out and started calling you and everyone in your town to make sure you were OK.

        : )

  3. I’ve seen the new series and I loved it. The second episode is probably my favourite of the three new episodes so you have plenty to look forward to. I loved the different theories as to how Sherlock survived the fall. The first one especially had me howling with laughter. I also loved John’s reaction to seeing Sherlock again-to repeatedly throttle him! I also liked Mary which surprised me as I thought I would dislike her but she’s just as much of a fan of the bromance as the fans are so I was pleasently surprised about her first appearance.

  4. Ahhhh I can’t read because of spoilers! I haven’t seen any of season 3 yet. Simply because I don’t want it to end, then have to wait forever for season 4 and 5. I’m going to suck it up and watch it tonight. Oh, and also, I’m a bigger Sherlock fan than you and I am the biggest Cumberbitch!

  5. Needless to say, I drank the Kool-Aid and I loved the taste of it. Meaning, I watched this show, and loved the hell out of it. Why can’t there be like 12-13 episodes of this like every other regular TV show?!?!?

  6. I watched the episode on Comcast On-Demand. I turned it off when the credits started rolling and noticed there was another half hour left on the episode, so I fired it back up. Sure enough there was a behind-the-scenes featurette with Gatiss and Moffat discussing season 3. They said they purposely left the explanation of “The magic trick” unexplained just to rile the fans and keep the mystery alive. Tried finding a youtube or something of it but cant seem to find the one I saw.

  7. Great write-up yo, Sherlock is such an incredible show. This whole season has been awesome, while it has a few bumps in the road and a few plot points that weren’t as strong as last season, it still continues to be amazing. Cumberbatch and Freeman are beautiful, I need to meet them in person! 😀

    • Yay! Another Sherlock fan! Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’d be willing to give up a limb to meet the pair of them…Ok maybe not, but if given the choice I’d have to seriously think about it. Hahaha.

  8. I just watched the second episode of the season three and ohohohoh! I wasn’t that impressed with the first episode especially after the finale of the second season (it was spectacular!) but the 2nd ep. Oh my. The best. What a writing. And acting. And everything. Well, you know. I’m not sure I want to watch the third one because my Twitter was full of it when it aired in UK and then it will again be over at least for a year. 😦

    • Oh man. You didn’t like the first episode?! LOVED it! Obviously. Haha. And I thought the second episode was wonderful, too. Probably the funniest episode to date. I mean, that stag party…brilliant. It is pretty depressing that it’ll be over for a long time again…but at least season three is supposed to be available to purchase in February!! Lol. Thanks for the follow, Satu! I’ve been perusing your blog and finding some awesome things. 🙂 Excited to see more!

      • Thanks to you too! In February already? Great! Plus after the last episode I can watch all extras. I like to watch them afterwards in case of spoilers.

  9. It’s a wonderful series. Incredible. I can’t highlight everything that I liked or I’d be here all night ha. I’ll be lying if I said I liked his real life partner in the role. Just didn’t think she fit. I much preferred the doctor/GP from the first series. The resolutions thing wasn’t perfect. Did you guess any of it?

    • Oh I LOVE Amanda Abbington in that role! She’s got so much sass! That doctor was okay, but for me nobody trumps Mary. Resolutions? Are you just talking about the end of season three?
